Silver Diamine Fluoride (also known as “SDF”) is an antibacterial liquid that is able to treat tooth sensitivity and help to stop tooth decay in a non-invasive, fast, affordable, and painless manner. The silver component is antibacterial while the fluoride remineralizes tooth structure. Compared to a traditional filling that requires shots and drilling of tooth structure, this treatment is non-invasive and more comfortable for the patient. It is a liquid that is simply brushed on to the cavity that can stop current decay and also prevent new decay in the future.
This treatment has been used in other countries for decades and the FDA cleared the use of SDF in the U.S. in 2014.
There are certain scenarios in which this treatment is very helpful and our dentist can discuss this option with you as an alternative treatment if appropriate for your child.
